The Riding Institute for Disabled Equestrians is a private, nonprofit organization designed to provide equine assisted activities through therapeutic programs to developmentally and physically disabled children and adults and offers equine-facilitated mental health activities. RIDE is a member of Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International.
Equine activities can develop self-awareness, build self-confidence and improve concentration and self-discipline. Horses give the disabled person a feeling of freedom and independence. The experience provides incentive for learning. The rider seated on a horse is gently and rhythmically moved in a manner that is similar to human walking.
What are equine assisted activities and therapies?
Throughout the world, hundreds of thousands of individuals with and without specials needs experience the rewarding benefits of equine assisted activities and therapies (EAAT). A physical or emotional special need does not limit a person from interacting with horses. In fact, such interactions can prove highly rewarding. For instance, experiencing the rhythmic motion of a horse is very beneficial. Riding a horse moves the rider’s body in motion similar to a human gait, so riders with physical needs often show improvement in flexibility, balance and muscle strength. Their movement also sends vibrations to the brain through the spinal cord.
Brainpower - "90% of the stimulation and nutrition to the brain is generated by the movement of the spine." - Roger Sperry, Nobel prize Recipient
